I do not have the same eloquence as Dan so I'm just going to post my conversation with him. (I hope he doesn't mind.)

Dan: The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.
do you know who said that?
me: nope
Dan: Cassius Clay
8:50 PM me: never would've guessed that lol
Dan: know who that is?
me: nope...
haha ^^;
Dan: he's better known as mohammad ali, the greatest boxer in the world
me: oh
8:51 PM Dan: if you replaced the word "fight" with "Christian life" and "dance under those lights" with "face temptation
you get
The Christian life is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, out there on the road, long before i face trials
me: mm...
Dan: mohammad ali's great insight into boxing is so applicable to the Christian life
8:52 PM you don't grow as a Christian during trials and tribulations
you get TESTED
you grow as you study the Word every day and go to him in prayer
so that on fight nights, seasons of great testing, tempations, or a tragic loss
on those nights, you might triumph as a Christian
8:53 PM we don't understand that
because we look for easy answers and instant gratification
it's the same reason why people don't work out or eat vegetables
they don't instantly gratify
8:54 PM Dan: we don't read our Bibles every day because we don't notice a day to day difference in behavior, temperament, or mood
so we let ourselves get saggy, we grow those spiritual love handles
and then on fight nights, we get our asses knocked to the ground
8:55 PM or less metaphorically, at times when we find that we need to be spiritually strong and we require a certain level of spiritual maturity
we don't have it
and we lose out
we lose out on something that might've brought us so much joy
